Onam Festival falls during the Malayalam month of Chingam (August - September). It is the biggest festival celebrated with joy and enthusiasm by people of all communities in Kerala, with four days of State holiday. Onam is reminiscent of Kerala’s agrarian past, and is considered to be a harvest festival and includes a spectrum of cultural events. Onam, the harvest festival of Kerala, celebrates the return of King Mahabali. The harmonious, cheerful, and exuberant festival is marked with flower mats (Pookkalam), grand feasts (Onasadya), boat races (Vallamkali), Thiruvathirakkali (a popular dance form), and leopard dance (Pulikkali).
